Exception to the Rule is a humorous and suspenseful novel about surviving institutions. Six African-American teenagers who go to the worst high school in the local inner city and are all put in jail are the main aspect of this theatre show. Room 111’s norms and expectations have been internalized by five group members who have been there for years. Flirting is a common pastime between them. They engage in conflict, scream, shout, gossip, smoke, and even escape plans.
