Metropolitan Opera Rigoletto Trailer

Rigoletto, one of the most thrilling and violent operas, is not for the faint of heart. Despite its extremes, the opera has a moral ambiguity. It’s easy to see why the censors had a problem with Rigoletto’s content! The story takes place in the dark realm of the Duke of Mantua, a man with few morals but many clouts, and the villain is never brought to justice. There is no way around the opera’s tragic conclusion, which is horrifyingly sad and offers minimal redemption. Rigoletto changes from the traditional Italian aria style toward unified musical tapestries.

Rigoletto accompanies the Duke to a pub, where he drinks and flirts with Maddalena, the alluring sister of the assassin Sparafucile. Gilda is distraught as she watches her cheating partner. Rigoletto hires Sparafucile to assassinate the Duke, promising that he will seek vengeance before joining Gilda in Verona. Mantua is famous worldwide for being Verdi’s opera “Rigoletto.” Indeed, the opera’s plot is fictitious. Verdi originally intended for the musical drama to be set in Paris, at the court of Francois I, portraying the king as an immoral and cynical womanizer.
