Based on the novel of the same name and the Warner Bros. film, the plot focuses on Peggy Sawyer, a young, naive newcomer to the world of musical theatre in New York City. She secures a place in the chorus of a new musical, Pretty Lady, directed by the dictatorial Julian Marsh. But when the show’s star, Dorothy Brock, is injured just before opening night, it thrusts Peggy into the spotlight as she gets her big break in showbiz.
Famous for its dazzling tap numbers and standards like “Lullaby of Broadway,” “We’re in the Money”, and its title song, the musical celebrates persistence and the magic of theatre. 42nd Street opened on Broadway in 1980 and has been revived on the Great White Way and staged in productions worldwide.
