After Midnight Trailer
After Midnight is a brilliant Broadway musical review from Jack Viertel that brings the audience back to the heyday of the Jazz Age at the Cotton Club in Harlem. His vision was realised by director and choreographer Warren Carlyle, whose breathtaking composition framed Ellington’s and Hughes’ work worth celebrating. Hughes’ poetry interlaced seamlessly with the works of Jimmy McHugh, Dorothy Fields, and Harold Arlen.
A plethora of elaborate songs like “Stormy Weather”, “I’ve Got the World on a String”, and “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” are expertly placed into the lavish performance, which features a multitude of singers and dancers acting as one. The thrilling 17-part ensemble, The Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars, which serves under Wynton Marsalis, supplies the breathtaking music.
When the show began its original run in early 2013 on Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre, it featured changing lists of guest performers like Fantasia Barrino, k.d. lang, Babyface with Toni Braxton, Vanessa Williams and even the ageless Patti LaBelle. It was further praised for its stunning choreography with a Tony Award 2014 for Best Choreography.
Overall, “After Midnight” stands as a centrepiece set amid the countless glories of the Harlem Renaissance. This eight-90 minute spectacle constructs an unimaginable concoction of era-defining music, poetry and dance, which seamlessly blend.
