Cabaret The musical by John Kander (music), Fred Ebb (lyrics), and Joe Masteroff (book) 19291930 Berlin in the early days of the Nazis. The flamboyant Emcee prompts audiences to forget their troubles at the debauched Kit Kat Klub. It centres on the character of a British cabaret singer, Sally Bowles, and a young American writer, Cliff Bradshaw, who fall in love. The lovers are dwarfed by the gathering political storm, not to mention the subplot for Fraulein Schneider and her Jewish paramour, Herr Schultz.

The musical contrasts the club’s hedonistic performances with the oppressive truths outside, driven by such iconic songs as “Willkommen,” “Maybe This Time”, and the eponymous “Cabaret” to underscore its themes. Cabaret has been revived several times since it debuted on Broadway in 1966, perhaps most notably when a 2024 production featuring Eddie Redmayne as the Emcee reconfigured the August Wilson Theatre into an immersive Kit Kat Klub. One of the reasons why the show still resonates after so many years is because it has timeless themes of political indifference, the perils of being complacent and questions about who we are and what we believe.
