Rent Broadway Theatre
Rent is a revolutionary rock musical by Jonathan Larson based on Puccini’s opera La Bohème. It is set in New York City in the late 1980s and early 1990s, capturing the life of a group of young artists and their friends who are fighting to survive in an era of poverty and the AIDS epidemic. The main story focuses on Mark, a filmmaker, and Roger, an HIV-positive musician, as they navigate through their personal and societal obstacles. Other important characters include Mimi, a dancer addicted to drugs; Angel, a drag performer with AIDS; Maureen and Joanne, a couple facing turmoil; and Collins, a philosophy lecturer.
Rent started streaming on Broadway in 1996, the first show to gain attention. It was praised for its accuracy in portraying the complex problems of the present time and the multicultural cast. It also received many prizes, most famously the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical. Rent’s heart-touching songs like ‘Seasons of Love’ and ‘La Vie Bohème’ have become timeless anthems. Rent continued showing for 12 years until 2008 and has been recreated worldwide, including a live television version in 2019.
